Lenore Nir (formerly Kert) Obituary
Lenore Nir, 82, of Ramat Gan, ISRAEL, passed away peacefully on Yom Kippur,
Sept 26, 2012 in Israel.
Sept 26, 2012 in Israel.
Lenore Nir was born on October 04, 1929 in Toronto, Canada to Lawrence and Florence Kert. From a young age, Lenore knew she wanted to be a writer; she filled diaries with poems and short stories. Later in life Lenore authored “Silver Spoon and After”, a memoir of her life.
Lenore worked as a translator for the American embassy in Tel Aviv; Henry Kissinger told his aides he wanted Lenore’s translations as he trusted them the most! Lenore was also a journalist for the Windsor Daily Star and the Toronto Star, and wrote freelance articles for many publications. Lenore volunteered in the ‘Olive Tree Movement’; she was committed to justice for all people.
Anyone who met Lenore Nir remembered her; she was full of enthusiasm, optimism, and joy of life. She had a brilliant mind and unbound energy. After university in 1951, at the age of 22, she followed her high school passion to be a pioneer in Israel and made aliyah to Israel. She spent her life loving Israel, the sun, swimming, the fruits, and the daily salads. With her then husband Shlomo Nir
(Winterfeld), she raised three children. She was delighted to see her three kids playing outdoors and growing happily in Israel.
Later in life Lenore moved back to Canada where she suffered from a long period of depression, but her writing and the daily exercise required to control her diabetes helped her recover. She wanted other people suffering from depression to know that there is a way to recover. She returned to Israel and felt happy again. From her book: “One morning, I walked along the seashore and felt something remarkable coursing through my frame. Joy. Delight. Happiness. I was barefoot and ran along the firm sand by the water’s edge…. I felt good. I was well. I was ready to live in Israel again.”
She is survived by her children Naomi, Eli, and Shaul (wife Pam), their father Shlomo, and her grandchildren Michelle, Jeremy, Shibolet, and Yarden.
Funeral took place in Natanya, Israel on September 27, 2012. Shiva was held in Moshav Tnuvut in Israel. If desired, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
